Behind this piece
Banaras has woven silk for over two thousand years, and the kadhwa technique sits at the heart of that tradition. Unlike cut-work or meenakari, kadhwa borders are built directly on the loom, each motif interlocked with the ground weave rather than applied after. Ansar Ali works within a lineage of karigar families in Varanasi who have practised this method across generations. The wide border on this saree carries the density and precision that only a kadhwa loom can produce. On superfine silk, the raspberry sorbet ground becomes almost luminous, the colour deepening as it catches different light.
How to style
Drape this saree in a classic Nivi pleat for a festive family lunch or a roka ceremony, and pair it with a sleeveless raw-silk blouse in ivory or warm cream to let the border lead. For a more dressed evening, a velvet blouse in deep plum pulls the pink into richer territory. Finish with uncut-diamond jhumkas or polki drops, and slip into gold kolhapuri block heels rather than stilettos, so the saree falls cleanly. For a relaxed heritage aesthetic, a gathered blouse in chanderi with small buti print works quietly alongside the bold kadhwa weave.
Fabric & care
Pure silk weakens with water and heat, so dry-cleaning is the safest option for this saree. If home-washing becomes necessary, use cold water with a capful of mild, pH-neutral liquid, and never twist or wring the fabric. Lay flat on a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then hang in shade. Iron on the reverse side at the lowest silk setting, with a thin muslin cloth between iron and weave. Store wrapped in soft unbleached muslin, away from direct light. Cedar blocks rather than naphthalene balls protect the silk without leaving chemical residue on the zari.
