about the piece,

Description

There is a particular joy in wearing a colour that does not whisper but sings, and this Sambalpuri cotton saree in deep radiant yellow does exactly that. Woven in the Sambalpur region of Odisha, this saree belongs to a tradition in which the ikat process, known locally as bandha, binds and dyes each thread before weaving begins, so that the motifs seem to bloom from within the fabric itself. The thread-woven motifs carry the quiet geometry that has defined Sambalpuri weaving for generations, and the rudraksha border, a sacred and recurring symbol in this craft, lends the piece a grounded, almost meditative quality. Pure cotton ensures the saree breathes generously, making it as suited to an afternoon puja as to a long festival day or a cultural gathering where the textile tells its own story. The yellow, vivid yet rooted in the earthy palette of Odishan craft, gives it a rare confidence. Style it with a plain ivory or off-white blouse to let the weave speak, or pair it with deep terracotta silk for a colour conversation that feels entirely of the land.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sambalpuri weaving originates in the Sambalpur district of western Odisha, practised by the Bhulia weaver community whose mastery of the bandha technique, a form of resist-dyeing applied to warp and weft before the loom is even warmed, produces motifs that seem to emerge from within the fabric itself. This saree carries that tradition in its thread-woven field and its rudraksha border, a motif borrowed from sacred geography. The radiant yellow, achieved through careful yarn dyeing, speaks to the region's affinity for solar warmth. Each repeat in the border is a small act of devotion, counted and placed by hand.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree with a mustard or ivory handloom cotton blouse in a round neck or boatneck cut for daytime cultural events or literary gatherings. For a festive afternoon, pair it with a deep-ochre silk blouse and terracotta Dhokra jewellery from Chhattisgarh, keeping the neck clear to let the rudraksha border do its work. On a cooler evening, layer a fine cotton or tussar stole across the shoulder. Ground the look with flat Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather or simple wooden block heels. Keep the palette earthen throughout.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wash this pure cotton saree by hand in cold water, using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid soaking for longer than ten minutes, as prolonged immersion can stress the bandha-dyed threads and cause colour migration. Do not wring; press the water out gently and dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades the yellow over time. Once dry, fold along the original pleats and store wrapped in a soft muslin cloth. Steam-iron on a medium cotton setting, preferably on the reverse. With careful handling, Sambalpuri cotton deepens in character with every wash.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
