the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven brocade for over a thousand years, and this fabric carries that unbroken lineage in every thread. The Kasim family works within the Banarasi katan silk tradition, where real zari, spun from metallic yarn, is interlaced by hand on a pit loom to raise floral motifs from the ground cloth. Purple, historically a colour reserved for ceremonial dress across the subcontinent, deepens the intensity of the gold zari here. Each metre demands hours of patient labour, the weft placed by hand, the pattern held entirely in the weaver's memory and the punched card of the jacquard.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into a structured anarkali with a sheer organza dupatta to let the brocade remain the focal point. For a reception or music concert, a floor-length skirt paired with a fitted blouse in the same cloth makes a confident choice. Diaspora brides might consider it as a border panel on a saree, combining it with plain katan silk. Complement with uncut polki or temple-gold jewellery rather than stones, since the zari already carries considerable visual richness. Block-heeled juttis in ivory or antique gold complete the silhouette without competing.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk brocade should never meet a washing machine. Dry-clean this fabric after every occasion, or hand-wash gently in cool water using a silk-specific mild cleanser if dry-cleaning is not possible. Do not wring or twist; press out water by rolling the cloth inside a clean cotton towel. Iron on the reverse side only, at the lowest silk setting, to protect both the zari and the woven pile. Store folded in unbleached muslin, never plastic, away from direct sunlight. Re-fold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease lines forming in the silk.
