about the piece,

Description

Stillness has its own kind of elegance, and this gown wears it with complete conviction. Rendered in a cool puritan grey, the satin carries that characteristic liquid weight that catches light without demanding attention. Across the fabric, Aari embroidery traces its unhurried path: the hooked needle of Kashmir's artisans coaxing silk thread into petals and blooms with a precision that no mechanical process can replicate. Aari work belongs to a long continuum of Kashmiri needlecraft, practised across the Valley in workshops where technique passes from hand to hand over generations. The flowers here sit with restraint, neither overwhelming the cloth nor disappearing into it, finding exactly the balance that distinguishes considered embellishment from ornament for its own sake. The long silhouette in satin gives the gown a quietly formal register, appropriate for festive evenings, cultural gatherings, or any occasion that calls for understated ceremony. Pair it with silver jhumkas and a fine silk dupatta in ivory or pale rose to let the embroidery remain the focal point. Minimal footwear, a block heel or embroidered mojari, completes the composition without distraction.

the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that craftspeople in Kashmir have wielded for centuries to coax silk thread into gardens of impossible precision. Rooted in the workshops of Srinagar and the valley towns beyond, this tradition once adorned the courts of Mughal nobility. Here, the needle traces chrysanthemums and climbing roses across puritan-grey satin, a colour chosen with the restraint of a winter morning on Dal Lake. The grey ground makes each petal luminous rather than loud, honouring the subtlety that defines Kashmiri craft at its most considered.

to wear it,

How to style

For a festive evening, layer this gown beneath a fine ivory or ecru pashmina stole and add jhumkas in aged silver or oxidised white metal. A mehendi or sangeet setting calls for strappy block-heeled sandals in champagne leather and a single stone-set maang-tikka. For a quieter gathering, paired with pointed kitten heels in nude suede and a kundan bracelet at the wrist, the gown reads as elegantly understated. The puritan-grey tone accepts pearl jewellery with particular grace, making it a sensible choice for an intimate family celebration or a winter evening reception.

to last,

Fabric & care

Satin, woven with a smooth filament face, marks easily and should never be machine washed. Hand wash gently in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, supporting the fabric's full weight throughout. Do not wring or twist. Roll the gown in a clean cotton towel to absorb excess water, then lay flat or hang on a padded hanger away from direct sunlight, which yellows pale satin over time. For the embroidered panels, press only on the reverse side using a cool iron over a pressing cloth. Store folded in breathable muslin, away from sharp light and moisture.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
