about the piece,

Description

Some shawls are made to be worn; this one is made to be read. Woven from pure Kashmiri wool and embroidered by hand using the centuries-old sozni technique, this shawl carries within its weave the patience of needle workers who have kept this tradition alive across generations in the Kashmir Valley. Sozni embroidery is among the most demanding of all Kashmiri needle arts, worked with a fine, hooked needle that pulls thread through taut fabric in strokes so delicate they resemble painting more than stitching. Here, that mastery is given over entirely to the paisley, rendered in giant, confident repeats that fill the field with a sense of joyful abundance rather than restraint. The wool itself is soft and substantial, offering genuine warmth without weight. Available in four considered colourways, from the depth of Black Beauty to the quiet warmth of Mojave Desert, each shade allows the embroidery to speak differently. Drape it over a silk kurta for a festive gathering, or fold it as a wrap across the shoulders of a winter coat, and let the paisleys do the talking.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sozni is among Kashmir's most meditative needle arts, practised by skilled craftsmen who have inherited the tradition across generations in the villages surrounding Srinagar. Unlike its bolder cousin, Aari work, Sozni embroidery is executed entirely with a single fine needle, building each paisley form stitch by patient stitch from the underside of the fabric. These giant paisleys, known locally as keri or boteh, carry centuries of Mughal garden symbolism. Worked onto pure Kashmiri wool, the embroidery moves with the drape, making each shawl a genuinely singular object rather than a manufactured pattern.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape the Ivory colourway loosely over a cream Lucknowi chikankari kurta set for a winter festive lunch, anchored with a kundan choker. The Biking Red reads with quiet authority over a charcoal wool blazer and straight trousers for a formal evening. Mojave Desert pairs beautifully with rust or ochre raw-silk separates at a winter wedding; finish with oxidised silver jhumkas and tan mojris. Black Beauty worn over a plain white anarkali lets the embroidery claim full attention. In each case, resist layering heavy dupattas; the shawl is the statement.

to last,

Fabric & care

Dry-clean this shawl wherever possible to preserve both the wool fibres and the integrity of the Sozni thread work. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water with a small measure of mild, pH-neutral detergent and never wring or twist. Press gently between clean cotton towels to remove excess moisture, then dry flat in shade. Do not hang, as wet wool stretches under its own weight. Store folded in a cotton muslin bag with a neem sachet or cedar block to deter moths. With attentive care, pure Kashmiri wool deepens in softness over many years of use.
