about the piece,

Description

Doeskin and silence: this is Kashmir speaking in its oldest tongue. Woven from pure wool in the diamond weave structure that generations of Kashmiri craftsmen have refined across centuries, this shawl carries the weight of a living tradition. The ground itself has a quiet geometry, each interlocking diamond a testament to the loom's patience, and over this landscape the embroiderers have laid their needlework in heavy thread, coaxing out the sinuous paisley and full-blown florals that remain inseparable from the valley's identity. The doeskin tone, warm and understated as late autumn light, holds the embroidery without competing with it, allowing every petal and curved boti to read with clarity. This is a piece suited to winter gatherings, festival mornings, or any occasion that asks for dignity without ostentation. Drape it over a cream or ivory kurta and let the embroidery carry the conversation; it works equally well folded across the shoulders of a formal coat when the evening grows cold.

the story,

Behind this piece

Kashmir's weaving traditions descend from a fifteenth-century courtly culture that prized wool as a medium for devotion as much as warmth. This shawl is woven in the diamond twill known locally as "kani-influenced" ground weave, its geometric repeat a hallmark of the valley's loom culture. Over this structured field, artisans have worked heavy thread embroidery in the sozni and aari traditions, tracing the paisley, or buta, and floral sprigs that have symbolised abundance across Mughal and Sikh-era courts. Doeskin, a pale warm taupe, is the colour of winter light on the Jhelum.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this shawl over a cream or ivory kurta set in fine chanderi or mul cotton for a winter wedding reception; the doeskin reads as a neutral that elevates without competing. For a more formal occasion, pin it at one shoulder over a silk saree in dusty rose or sage, and let the embroidered paisleys face outward. Jewellery in oxidised silver or unpolished gold complements the earthy tone beautifully. On cooler evenings, fold it lengthwise over a camel-coloured woollen coat with leather juttis in cognac or tobacco.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wool breathes and regulates temperature, but it demands gentleness. Hand wash this shawl in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, or one formulated specifically for wool. Do not wring; press water out gently between two clean towels. Dry flat in the shade, reshaping while damp. Never hang to dry, as the weight will distort the weave. Store folded, not rolled, wrapped in a soft muslin cloth. Before long-term storage, air the shawl thoroughly and place a cedar block nearby to protect the fibres from moth damage.
