Behind this piece
Kumbakonam, nestled along the Kaveri delta in Tamil Nadu, has long been the quieter custodian of temple-silk traditions that Kanchipuram claims more loudly. The weavers here work pure mulberry silk with zari threads, embedding bootis across the body in a rhythm borrowed from ancient temple-pillar carvings. This saree carries that devotional precision: each buti placed with geometric intention, the green contrast pallu arriving like a sudden note of turmeric-leaf freshness against the blazing orange ground. It is weaving that understands ceremony without needing to announce itself.
How to style
For a morning puja or a temple wedding, pair this saree with a raw-silk blouse in forest green, pulling the pallu colour forward. At a festive lunch, choose a contrast blouse in antique gold tissue and finish with temple-style gold jhumkas and Kolhapuri chappals in tan. For an evening cultural event, drape it in the Nivi style, layer a lightweight Kanjivaram silk dupatta over one shoulder, and anchor the look with uncut-diamond studs and a thin gold vaddanam at the waist.
Fabric & care
Pure silk demands patience. Dry-clean this saree after every second or third wear to preserve the zari's lustre; home washing loosens the metallic thread and weakens the weave. If airing between wears, keep it away from direct sunlight, which fades both the orange ground and the zari's silver-gold tone. Fold along the original pleats, placing a thin muslin cloth between each fold to prevent crease marks from setting. Store flat, wrapped in a breathable cotton muslin bag, never in plastic. Re-fold every six months to rest the silk fibres.
