Pure Silk Paisley Jaal Hand-Aari Embroidered Long Jacket from Kashmir
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Description
There are garments that carry a landscape within them, and this long jacket carries the stillness of the Dal at dawn. Worked entirely in hand-aari embroidery by Kashmir's needle artisans, the paisley jaal unfurls across pure silk in a continuous, meditative repeat that has defined the valley's textile identity for centuries. The aari hook, guided by a craftsperson's trained eye rather than any mechanical aid, pulls each thread loop by loop into a surface of remarkable density and rhythm. Pure silk receives this work with particular generosity, lending the jaal a luminous depth that heavier grounds cannot offer. Two considered colourways are available: French Oak, a warm celadon-adjacent tone that recalls dried chinar leaves, and Titanite, a cool grey with an almost mineral quiet to it. Wear it over a fine chanderi kurta in ivory for festive evenings, allowing the embroidery to hold full attention without competition. For a more contemporary reading, layer it over wide-legged silk trousers and a simple camisole, letting the jacket serve as the sole point of ceremony.
Behind this piece
Aari embroidery originates in the workshops of Kashmir, where craftsmen draw a hooked needle called the aari through tightly stretched fabric to create continuous chain-stitch loops of extraordinary precision. The paisley, or boteh, motif carries centuries of Persian and Mughal influence, arriving in the Valley through royal patronage and never leaving. Worked across a jaal, a latticed all-over pattern, the design requires the embroiderer to hold the full composition in mind from the first stitch. On pure silk, the thread catches light differently at every angle, making the jacket a quietly animate thing.
How to style
Worn over slim ivory palazzo trousers, this jacket becomes effortless occasion dressing for a literary evening or art-gallery opening. For a wedding festivity, layer it above a tissue-silk lehenga in champagne or pale gold, and finish with uncut-diamond drops and kolhapuri block heels. On quieter days, let it fall over straight-cut dark denim with simple pearl studs and pointed leather mules. The French Oak colourway reads warmer under evening light; Titanite has a cooler, more architectural quality that suits tailored silhouettes and minimal silver jewellery particularly well.
Fabric & care
Pure silk is a protein fibre and rewards patience. Hand wash in cold water using a pH-neutral or silk-specific detergent, supporting the fabric fully so the embroidered panels do not distort under their own weight. Do not wring; press gently between clean cotton towels and dry flat away from direct sunlight, which yellows silk over time. Iron on the lowest setting with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric, always on the reverse. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag, never compressed under other garments, and air the jacket periodically to preserve the integrity of the silk thread.
