about the piece,

Description

Silence, when woven, looks something like this. Drawn from the fine undercoat of Changthangi goats that graze the high-altitude pastures of Ladakh, this pashmina carries in its very fibre the cold clarity of altitude. The shawl is worked in Sozni, the most demanding of Kashmir's needlework traditions, in which a single artisan guides a fine needle through the fabric to build motifs from the reverse side, a discipline that can occupy months of concentrated effort. The embroidery here unfolds across the entire field of the cloth, a practice known as all-over work, requiring a patience and precision that no machine has yet learned to replicate. The colour is entirely natural, undyed, and therefore luminous in the particular way that only unaltered fibre can be: warm in candlelight, softly ivory in open shade. This is a shawl that belongs equally to a winter wedding and to a quiet afternoon of considered dressing. Drape it over the shoulders above a fine Chanderi kurta or pair it with ivory silk for an occasion that calls for heirloom restraint. Folded, it doubles as the kind of gift one gives with both hands.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sozni is the quieter art form of Kashmir, a needle-work tradition that asks everything of the craftsman and announces nothing to the room. Worked entirely by hand on handwoven Pashmina, each stitch is placed with a fine needle through the underside of the cloth, leaving no knot, no bulk, no evidence of labour on the reverse. The motifs here follow the all-over buti convention, rooted in Mughal garden imagery and refined across generations in the workshops of Srinagar and Kanihama. The natural, undyed ground honours the Changthangi goat and the high-altitude plateau where this fibre originates.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape it over a handloom silk sari in ivory or dusty rose for a winter wedding, and let the Sozni embroidery carry all the ornament. The shawl needs no competition from heavy jewellery; a single gold kada at the wrist is sufficient. For diaspora occasions, layer it over a fine cashmere sweater and wide-leg trousers, securing it at one shoulder with a vintage brooch. On cooler evenings, wrap it fully around a linen kurta in camel or ecru, pairing with kolhapuri block-heel sandals. The natural palette makes every combination effortless.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral shampoo; never wring or twist the cloth. Gently press the water out and lay the shawl flat on a clean cotton towel to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades natural fibre. Do not hang while wet, as the weight will distort the weave. Store folded, not rolled, wrapped in the supplied muslin bag or plain cotton fabric. Place dried neem leaves nearby as a natural moth deterrent. With this care, a Pashmina shawl deepens in softness across decades of wear.
