the story,

Behind this piece

The mundu is not merely a garment. It is the daily language of Kerala, worn by men from the paddy fields of Palakkad to the verandahs of old Thrissur homes. Woven on pit looms from single-ply cotton, its construction prizes breath and drape above ornament. The stripe border, typically rendered in gold or coloured thread, speaks to a centuries-old convention of marking occasion through the hem alone. This version, offered in Lucent White and Golden Ochre, carries that same restraint: clean, purposeful, and entirely confident in its simplicity.

to wear it,

How to style

For a temple visit or Onam sadya, pair the Lucent White mundu with a crisp off-white cotton shirt and traditional Kerala melmundu across the shoulder. Add Kolhapuri sandals in tan. The Golden Ochre variation works beautifully beside a deep teal or burgundy cotton kurta for a cultural programme or family gathering. Finish with a simple silver or oxidised metal chain and closed leather sandals. Both colours receive a dhoti tuck or the single-fold mundu drape with equal grace, suiting tall and lean frames particularly well.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wash in cool water, 30 degrees or below, using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Hand washing preserves the weave tension best; if machine washing, use a gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. Do not wring. Dry flat or hang in shade, away from direct afternoon sun, which yellows natural cotton fibres over time. Iron on medium heat while slightly damp to restore the crisp fall essential to a proper mundu drape. Store folded along the original press lines, in a dry cotton bag, to maintain structure across seasons.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
