the story,

Behind this piece

The dhoti and angavastram have dressed men in sacred and celebratory moments across the subcontinent for centuries. This set draws on the weaving traditions of Tamil Nadu, where temple iconography long dictated border motifs. The peacock, sacred to Murugan, and the deer, an emblem of grace and forest abundance, appear here as zari-woven forms along the border, a vocabulary borrowed from the looms of Kanchipuram and Arni. Pure cotton, rather than silk, speaks to everyday devotion: the fabric of the puja hall, the wedding mandapam, and the quiet evening prayer.

to wear it,

How to style

For a temple visit or grihapravesam ceremony, pair this set with a fine cotton or raw silk kurta in off-white or deep turmeric. Let the zari border carry the visual weight and keep the upper garment understated. For a wedding reception, layer a silk Nehru jacket in forest green or burgundy over a plain kurta. Complete the look with Kolhapuri chappals in tan leather or traditional Mysorian paduka. A single strand of rudrakshas or a gold chain at the neck honours the set's devotional spirit without overcrowding it.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wash pure cotton separately in cold water on a gentle cycle, or by hand with mild detergent. Avoid wringing; the zari border, woven with metallic thread, can distort under pressure. Instead, press gently between two towels and dry flat in shade. Direct sunlight weakens cotton fibres and causes zari to lose its sheen over time. Iron on a medium-cotton setting while slightly damp, working around rather than directly over the zari border. Fold along the natural crease lines and store flat, wrapped in a soft muslin cloth to prevent border abrasion.
