the story,

Behind this piece

Sambalpur sits at the cultural heart of Odisha, and its weavers have practised the resist-dyeing art of ikat for generations, binding and dyeing yarn before a single thread meets the loom. The resulting patterns carry an inherent softness at the edges, that characteristic blurred poetry that no print can replicate. This saree's rudraksha border is particularly notable: a sacred motif borrowed from devotional iconography, rendered in warp-and-weft geometry by hands that understand both ritual and repetition. Pure cotton grounds the weave, making it breathable, honest, and suited to daily reverence as much as ceremony.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this saree in a classic Odia nivi pleat for a cultural festival or temple visit, pairing it with a full-sleeved cotton blouse in a complementary earthy tone. For a literary event or craft bazaar, style it with a sleeveless raw-silk blouse and block-printed potli bag. Office wear calls for a tucked, minimal drape with a crisp white blouse, low block heels, and oxidised silver studs. Across all three occasions, lean towards dokra pendants or terracotta jewellery: materials that share the saree's handmade provenance and regional sensibility without competing for attention.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, as the ikat's resist-dyed yarns are sensitive to harsh chemicals that may cause colour migration. Do not wring; press the moisture out gently against the basin. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades the deep-dyed cotton over time. Iron on a medium cotton setting while slightly damp to restore crispness. Fold along the original weave lines, place tissue paper between folds, and store in a breathable muslin bag. Proper care ensures this cotton saree softens beautifully with each wash, ageing into character.
