Behind this piece
Bangalore has long held a quiet distinction in India's silk canon. While Kanchipuram commands ceremony and Varanasi commands grandeur, Bangalore silk speaks in a more intimate register: fluid, luminous, refined. This saree carries that restraint in its very weave. The plum-purple ground, achieved through careful dyeing of pure mulberry silk, deepens towards the border, where zari threads trace their temple motifs with architectural precision. The contrast pallu lifts the composition entirely, a device Bangalore weavers have long used to let silk speak in two voices at once.
How to style
Wear this with a close-fitted raw silk blouse in ivory or antique gold to let the plum hold centre stage. For a classical recital or a winter wedding reception, pair with uncut diamond jhumkas and kolhapuri heels in tan leather. A second reading: a deep wine blouse echoing the pallu, worn with oxidised silver, suits a literary evening or a museum opening. For the diaspora dressing abroad, the zari border photographs exceptionally well under warm indoor light, requiring nothing more than a clean, tonal bindi.
Fabric & care
Pure mulberry silk demands gentleness above all else. Dry-clean this saree after every second or third wear to preserve both the zari and the dye depth. If hand-washing becomes necessary, use cold water and a capful of mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which oxidises silk gradually and dulls zari. Store folded in a dry muslin cloth, never in plastic. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks along the silk grain.
