Behind this piece
Gota work traces its lineage to the royal ateliers of Rajasthan, where artisans in Jaipur and Ajmer perfected the art of applying metallic ribbon onto fabric to create luminous surface decoration. Here, that tradition meets the deep, light-drinking pile of velvet, a textile itself long associated with Mughal court dress. The gota patches are applied by hand along the border, their gold catching differently against each of the four ground colours: the bruised depth of Beetroot Purple, the cool authority of Jet Black, the botanical richness of Fern Green, the otherworldly shift of Prism Violet.
How to style
Cut this fabric into a structured anarkali or a floor-length skirt and let the gota border fall at the hem, where it will catch light as you move. For Diwali or a winter wedding reception, pair the Beetroot Purple or Prism Violet with polki kundan earrings and block-heeled mojris in antique gold. The Jet Black works beautifully fashioned into a cape draped over a silk kurta for a contemporary festive look. Fern Green cut into a blouse with a Benarasi silk saree offers an unexpected, deeply considered contrast that rewards a second glance.
Fabric & care
Velvet's cut pile is sensitive to pressure and moisture. Dry clean this fabric whenever possible to preserve both the pile and the gota ribbon, which may loosen under machine agitation. If spot-cleaning is necessary, use a barely damp cloth and allow it to air dry away from direct heat or sunlight, which fades deep-dyed velvets rapidly. Never iron directly on the pile; instead, steam gently from a distance or hold the fabric face-down over a velvet board. Store folded loosely or rolled, never compressed beneath heavier textiles.
