Behind this piece
The dushala is not merely a shawl worn doubled. It is a Punjabi institution, woven wide enough to enfold the whole upper body in a single sweep of warmth. Amritsar has been the centre of Punjab's woollen trade for centuries, its looms producing the lohi, a plainly woven, densely fulled wool wrap favoured by farmers, poets, and patriarchs alike. There is no embroidery here to admire, no pattern to decipher. The craft speaks entirely through the quality of the fibre, the evenness of the weave, and the particular heft that only pure wool carries.
How to style
Draped over a white kurta-pyjama in ivory or parchment, this dushala becomes quiet, considered winter dressing for a morning puja or a family gathering. In simply taupe, wrap it over a Nehru-collar bandhgala for a winter wedding and let a silver kada be the sole adornment. For colder evenings outdoors, pull it over a dark shawl-collar cardigan with kolhapuri chappals; the plainness of the lohi reads as deliberate restraint rather than absence of effort. All three colourways carry this same understated authority across occasions.
Fabric & care
Pure wool benefits greatly from patience. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never agitate or wring, and press the water out gently before laying flat to dry away from direct sunlight. Machine washing will felt and shrink the fibre irreversibly. Once fully dry, fold along the length and store in a breathable cotton bag with a cedar block to discourage moths. Avoid plastic. A well-kept lohi softens beautifully over years of use and, handled with care, will last across more than one generation.
