Plain Handloom Pure Pashmina Shawl
Dry clean recommended. Store with natural cedar or neem leaves. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
Description
Some textiles do not ask for embellishment; they arrive already complete. This shawl is woven from one hundred per cent pure Pashmina, the storied undercoat of the Changthangi goat, combed by hand each spring across the high-altitude meadows of Ladakh and Kashmir. The fibre is among the finest in the world, measuring barely twelve to sixteen microns in diameter, and its warmth-to-weight ratio remains unmatched by any cultivated wool. Woven on traditional handlooms by artisans schooled in the Kashmiri tradition, the plain weave allows the cloth itself to speak: a surface so soft it yields to the touch like breath, with a quiet drape that silk would envy. Available in Burnt Russet, a colour that recalls autumn saffron fields at dusk, and Marzipan Blue, serene as a winter sky over the Dal Lake, each shade deepens the inherent lustre of the Pashmina. Wear it folded over the shoulders at an evening gathering where understatement reads as the sharpest elegance. It travels equally well as a wrap on a long flight, keeping the chill at bay without adding any weight to the journey.

Behind this piece
Pashmina originates in the high-altitude valleys of Kashmir, where the fibre is combed by hand from the undercoat of the Changthangi goat, raised by Changpa nomads on the Tibetan plateau above 14,000 feet. The resulting yarn is among the finest natural fibres in the world, measured at 12 to 16 microns. This plain handloom shawl honours the unadorned tradition, where the weave itself carries the statement. Woven on pit looms in the Kashmir Valley, it demands patience from the craftsperson, and rewards the wearer with a warmth that is featherlight and lasting.
How to style
In Burnt Russet, drape this shawl loosely over a cream silk kurta and straight-cut trousers for a winter lunch or gallery evening; pair with oxidised copper earrings and block-heeled mojris. In Marzipan Blue, wrap it as a stole over a charcoal wool suit for a formal occasion abroad, where its quietness speaks fluently. Either shade layers beautifully over a handloom cotton saree for festive mornings, the shawl folded into a neat pleat across one shoulder, anchored with a single antique silver pin and finished with flat kolhapuris.
Fabric & care
Pashmina fibre is protein-based and requires a considered hand. Wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent or pure baby shampoo; never wring or scrub. Gently press out water and lay flat on a clean cotton towel to dry in shade. Do not hang, as the weight of wet pashmina will distort the weave. Store folded, never on a hanger, wrapped in muslin or a breathable cotton bag. Cedar balls offer natural moth protection. With this care, a pure pashmina shawl deepens in softness and character across many decades of wearing.
