the story,

Behind this piece

The dhoti and angavastram set belongs to one of the oldest living textile traditions in South India, where handloom cotton has been woven for temple ritual, royal ceremony, and daily devotion in equal measure. The woven border, worked directly into the loom rather than applied after weaving, is the defining signature of this form. Communities across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have practised this art across generations, measuring quality in the tightness of the count and the precision of the border repeat. Plain cotton of this kind ages beautifully, softening with every wash into something that feels earned.

to wear it,

How to style

For a temple visit or traditional family ceremony, pair this set with a starched cotton kurta in ivory or a deep peacock blue. Let the woven border do the speaking; keep the kurta unembellished. On a wedding day, drape the angavastram across one shoulder and add a Kanchipuram silk stole for layered occasion dressing. For festive puja at home, wear it simply with a fine cotton banyan beneath and slip into Kolhapuri sandals. A single gold chain or rudraksha mala at the neck completes the register without overwhelming the restraint of the weave.

to last,

Fabric & care

Cotton of this count responds best to a cold or lukewarm hand wash with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid wringing; instead, press the fabric between two dry towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade to prevent the border from pulling out of alignment. Iron on medium heat while the cloth is still slightly damp, using firm strokes along the length of the fabric rather than across it. Store folded along the original press lines, away from direct sunlight. Starch lightly before each wearing to restore the characteristic crispness of fine handloom cotton.
