the story,

Behind this piece

Phulkari, meaning "flower work," originates in the fertile plains of Punjab, where women once stitched these radiant pieces as part of a bride's trousseau. Worked traditionally on khaddar cloth with untwisted silk floss, the craft follows a darning stitch that catches light from the reverse side of the fabric. This dupatta honours that inheritance: dense geometric blooms scatter across art silk, framed by a jhalar border whose rhythmic fringe echoes the festive sensibility of Punjabi folk dress. The latkan pallu adds ceremonial weight, transforming a scarf into a considered act of regional remembrance.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape the Bristol Black and Golden Rod colourways over a straight-cut ivory kurta for Diwali gatherings, anchoring the look with juttis in antique gold. For a daytime wedding function, pair Pink Peacock with a raw silk salwar suit in blush and reach for silver chandbali earrings. The Samba colourway, rich and earthy, sits beautifully against cream or mustard pret kurtas for a mehendi afternoon. Let the jhalar fringe fall loose at the front; avoid pinning it, so the latkan pallu moves naturally and the embroidery remains the uninterrupted focal point.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk carries the lustre of pure silk without the same fragility, but it rewards gentle handling. Hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the dupatta submerged for no more than three minutes. Do not wring; instead press between two dry towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can shift the embroidery threads over time. Iron on a low silk setting with a pressing cloth placed over the phulkari work. Store folded in muslin, never in plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe.
