the story,

Behind this piece

Kashmir's aari embroiderers have spent centuries translating garden mythology into thread. The Tree of Life motif that inhabits this jacket belongs to a symbolic vocabulary older than the Mughal courts that once patronised it, a cosmological image connecting earth to sky, root to canopy. Worked in the aari tradition using a fine hooked needle directly into pure wool, each branch is plotted by hand, not by machine memory. The phantom-black ground gives the embroidery unusual gravity, allowing the tree to emerge as though lit from within, an effect no printed or woven cloth could replicate.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this jacket over a cream or ivory chanderi kurta for an autumn evening gathering; the contrast lets the embroidery speak without competition. For diaspora occasions such as Diwali dinners abroad, pair it with slim silk trousers in deep ivory and kolhapuri block-heeled sandals. A third reading, entirely contemporary: layer it over a white fine-cotton shirt and straight-cut trousers, fastened with a single oxidised silver ring on one hand. Avoid heavily printed base garments. Jewellery, if any, should be minimal and preferably in silver or unpolished gold to honour the craft's own visual weight.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure Kashmiri wool is a living fibre and rewards patience in its upkeep. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral wool wash; never wring or twist. Press gently between two dry towels to remove excess water, then dry flat in shade away from direct sunlight, which fades hand-embroidered thread over time. Steam lightly from the reverse side to remove creases; never place a hot iron directly on aari embroidery. Store folded, not hung, wrapped in a soft muslin cloth. Cedar blocks placed nearby discourage moths without the chemical residue that mothballs leave on fine wool.
