the story,

Behind this piece

Chennai has long been a crossroads of silk weaving traditions, where Kanchipuram's zari vocabulary meets urban workshop sensibility. This saree draws on that legacy: a peach-pink art silk ground carries a lotus motif border woven in gold zari, the flower holding centuries of significance in South Indian temple iconography. The striped pallu adds a graphic rhythm characteristic of Tamil Nadu's weaving aesthetic. Art silk, woven to approximate the drape of pure mulberry, allows this classical design language to reach a wider circle of wearers without sacrificing the visual authority of the pattern.

to wear it,

How to style

For a festive afternoon, pair with a contrast ivory or champagne silk blouse and gold Kempstone jhumkas. A temple-occasion calls for a high-necked brocade blouse in deep terracotta, finished with an antique gold kamarbandh and Kolhapuri heels in tan. For a cultural evening or art gallery opening, try a structured organza blouse in ivory, keep jewellery restrained to a single gold choker, and carry a brass-clasped potli. The peach-pink ground is especially flattering draped in the Nivi style with a neatly pleated pallu allowed to fall loose and unclipped.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk benefits from gentle hand-washing in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid soaking for longer than three to four minutes, as prolonged immersion weakens the fibre. Do not wring; instead, press gently between two dry towels and hang in shade to dry away from direct sunlight, which fades colour over time. Once dry, steam-iron on a low setting from the reverse side to protect the zari. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, not a plastic cover, to allow the fabric to breathe between wearings.
