the story,

Behind this piece

Assam's silk tradition runs deeper than commerce; it is a language spoken through the loom. This fabric belongs to that lineage, woven with the characteristic buti motifs and floral registers that Assamese weavers have refined across generations. The delicate bootis are not printed but structurally woven into the silk, a distinction that speaks to the patience of the craft. Parsnip, that soft, chalky warmth of colour, is rarely attempted in Assamese silk, making this piece an understated rarity for those who prefer their heritage worn quietly.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an unlined kurta with a straight hem and wear it to a daytime literary gathering or a festive family lunch. The woven floral registers will carry enough visual weight that jewellery can remain minimal: a pair of carved bone or oxidised silver earrings will suffice. For a more formal occasion, have it stitched as a kalidar suit with churidar, finishing the look with block-printed khadi dupatta in ivory. Juttis in natural tan leather ground the entire silhouette without competing with the silk's quiet elegance.

to last,

Fabric & care

Silk from Assam is strong in structure but sensitive to harshness. Wash this fabric by hand in cold water using a pH-neutral, soap-free cleanser, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Rinse once gently and lift rather than squeeze the water out. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades natural silk irreversibly. Iron on the reverse side using a cool setting, placing a thin muslin cloth between the iron and the fabric. Store rolled in unbleached cotton, away from moisture and cedar balls, which can stain light-coloured silk over time.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
