the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the fine hooked needle that Kashmiri craftsmen draw through taut fabric with the patience of a miniaturist. The tradition flourishes in the valley's old quarters, where families have inherited the stitch across generations. On this oyster-white pure wool fabric, the craftsman has scattered paisleys in the all-over style known locally as jaal, a lattice of curved forms whose ancestry traces back to Mughal court textiles. Wool accepts the aari hook with particular grace, allowing the thread to sit proud of the weave and catch light with quiet depth.

to wear it,

How to style

For a winter wedding reception, stitch this fabric into a longline kameez and wide-leg salwar, then layer a fine pashmina dupatta in ivory or pale gold. Finish with jadau drop earrings and ivory mojris. For a literary evening or gallery opening, a straight kurta silhouette in this fabric worn over slim trousers reads effortlessly understated. On a cold afternoon in the hills, pair a boxy jacket cut from this wool with dark denim and tan leather kolhapuris. The oyster ground accepts both gold and silver jewellery with equal ease.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure wool is a resilient fibre that benefits from minimal washing. Hand-wash in cool water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, pressing the fabric softly rather than wringing it. Rinse once and ease out excess water by rolling the cloth in a clean towel. Dry flat in shade to preserve the weave's shape and protect the aari embroidery threads. Steam lightly on a low setting, working from the reverse side. Store folded, not hung, in a breathable cotton bag. Cedar blocks placed nearby will discourage moth without the harshness of chemical repellents.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
