the story,

Behind this piece

Crewel embroidery from the Kashmir Valley carries one of the oldest needle traditions on the subcontinent. Worked historically on coarse woollen ground cloth called aarikam, the craft migrated over centuries onto lighter base fabrics, adapting its characteristic chain and stem stitches to new surfaces. This border brings that lineage forward onto art silk, pairing the organic, foliage-inspired motifs so typical of Kashmiri crewelwork with metallic thread that catches light in the manner of zari. The result sits between the artisanal and the opulent, retaining the rhythmic, unhurried quality that distinguishes hand-guided needlework from its machine-made counterparts.

to wear it,

How to style

Border fabric of this character rewards considered placement. Set along the hem and sleeve cuffs of an ivory or deep teal anarkali, it transforms a simple silhouette into something ceremonial, appropriate for a mehendi or festive luncheon. Alternatively, use it as a dupatta border on ivory georgette for a fusion bridal look, finishing the ensemble with antique gold jhumkas and block-heeled mojaris. For a contemporary note, let a single strip run vertically down the front placket of a straight kurta worn with slim cigarette trousers and oxidised silver rings at the wrist.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk, despite its lustrous appearance, is a woven synthetic or viscose blend and responds poorly to heat and friction. Hand wash this fabric in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation gentle to protect the crewel stitches and metallic thread from distortion. Never wring; press the excess water out softly between a folded towel. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which yellows the metallic filaments over time. Store loosely rolled in a soft muslin cloth rather than folded sharply, which can crease the embroidery permanently.
