the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's oldest living conversation with fabric, a craft that flourished under the patronage of the Nawabs of Awadh and continues today in the hands of Muslim artisan families in the old city's mohallas. On this onyx-white georgette, the needle traces paisleys and floral motifs across the anchal in shadow work and tepchi stitches, building dimension without weight. The pairing of monochrome georgette with white thread is considered the purest expression of the craft: restraint as artistry, negative space as statement. Each motif is counted, placed, and completed entirely by hand.

to wear it,

How to style

For a formal afternoon event, pair this sari with a silk organza blouse in ivory or pale gold, strappy block-heeled sandals, and a single strand of polki or freshwater pearls. At a literary gathering or cultural evening, drape it in a Gujarati-style pleat to let the embroidered anchal fall forward, and wear oxidised silver earrings with a dark bindi. For a wedding guest look, choose a richly embroidered blouse in deep emerald or burgundy to anchor the onyx-white, and finish with a potli bag in matching silk brocade.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a fine, lightly creped weave that loses its drape with rough handling. Dry clean this sari after every second or third wear to preserve the chikankari stitching, which can loosen under machine agitation. If hand washing is necessary, use cold water and a mild fabric cleanser, gently squeezing without wringing. Dry flat in shade away from direct sunlight, which yellows white thread over time. Store folded in a soft cotton muslin cloth, never in plastic, and place a neem leaf or cedar block nearby to discourage insects.
