about the piece,

Description

Woven at the intersection of two of Kashmir's most revered traditions, this shawl is a quiet declaration of the valley's genius. The ground is pure Pashmina, drawn from the fine undercoat of Changthangi goats raised on the Changthang plateau of Ladakh, where altitude and cold conspire to produce a fibre of extraordinary softness and warmth. Across this ground, Jamawar weaving lays in its characteristic tapestry-like patterns, building colour and structure through the interlocking of fine silk threads on the loom. Over this woven foundation, Sozni embroidery, the celebrated needle-and-thread craft practised by skilled karigars of the Kashmir Valley, traces its fine, unhurried lines, adding dimension and luminosity that no machine can replicate. The result is a shawl that carries within it hundreds of hours of sustained, specialist labour, belonging equally to the ceremonial trousseau and the considered everyday wardrobe. Drape it over formal occasion wear as an heirloom accent, or fold it across the shoulders of a simple silk kurta to let the embroidery speak without competition.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sozni embroidery is one of Kashmir's most meditative needle arts, worked by craftsmen who spend months, sometimes years, completing a single shawl. The word sozni refers to the fine, single-needle technique that coaxes silk thread through pure Pashmina without disturbing the weave beneath. Jamawar, historically woven for Mughal courts, brings its architectural tapestry patterning to this piece, creating a conversation between loom and needle. The Pashmina itself is combed from Changthangi goats at altitude, in Ladakh's high plateau, then spun and woven in the Kashmir Valley by hereditary karigar families.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape it loosely over an ivory or deep burgundy silk kurta for a winter mehendi or a literary evening. For daytime elegance, fold it into a wide stole over a neutral cashmere co-ord and let the multicoloured sozni do all the speaking. On a cool formal evening, it works beautifully over a Banarasi silk saree in a tonal shade, pinned at the shoulder with a carved silver brooch. Complete any look with kolhapuri block-heeled sandals in tan leather, or simple juttis in gold, and keep jewellery to uncut diamond or Kashmiri silver.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent formulated for delicate fibres, or use baby shampoo as a safe alternative. Never wring or twist. Support the full weight of the wet shawl and press water out carefully between two clean towels. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades silk embroidery over time. Store folded in a muslin or cotton bag, never polythene, with a cedar block nearby to discourage moths. A Pashmina cared for well deepens in softness and lustre across decades of careful wearing.
