about the piece,

Description

A clutch that carries the memory of mirrors long before mirrors became ordinary. Worked in pure cotton and ablaze with the geometry of shisha embroidery, this piece draws from the bold mirror-work traditions of Kutch and Saurashtra, where artisans have long stitched small rounds of mica and glass into cloth to catch and scatter light. The ground fabric, in a vivid carmine deepening into fuchsia rose, gives the threadwork a warmth that feels both festive and entirely considered. Each mirror is secured by a web of buttonhole stitches, a technique passed through generations of craft communities in western Gujarat, where the discipline of the hand determines how brilliantly the surface will catch a candle or an afternoon. The front flap opens the conversation between structure and ornament, framing the mirrors like a deliberate composition rather than a decoration. At a free size, it sits lightly in the hand without demanding attention it has not already earned. Carry it against a plain ivory or stone-coloured kurta to let the embroidery speak without competition; it reads equally well at a mehendi as it does at an intimate winter wedding.

the story,

Behind this piece

This clutch carries the vocabulary of Kutch, where mirror embroidery, known as shisha work, has been practised for centuries by communities whose names are stitched into the very identity of the region. Large convex mirrors, set against pure cotton and secured with intricate thread work, were believed to deflect the evil eye and catch the light of prosperity. The riot of carmine, cyan blue, fuchsia rose, and marigold reflects the colour philosophy of the Rann, where a landscape of extremes inspired craft of extraordinary exuberance. Each stitch is a conversation between utility and ceremony.

to wear it,

How to style

Carry this clutch against an ivory Lucknowi chikankari kurta set for a festive afternoon gathering, letting the mirrors do the speaking. For a wedding evening, pair it with a deep teal silk saree and oxidised silver jhumkas; the marigold and emberglow threads will answer the gold in your border beautifully. On a diaspora occasion, it translates equally well held against a structured black blazer and wide-leg trousers, where its embroidery becomes the single, deliberate statement. Kolhapuri block heels or strappy gold sandals complete any of these combinations with ease.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton breathes, but embroidered cotton demands patience. Do not machine wash. Instead, spot clean gently with a damp muslin cloth and mild soap, taking care never to rub the mirror settings, as the thread anchoring each shisha can loosen under pressure. Lay flat in shade to dry. Never wring or fold tightly, as creasing can stress the embroidery threads over time. Store wrapped in soft cotton cloth, away from humidity and direct light, which can fade the dyes. With considered care, this clutch will hold its colour and structure across years of use.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
