the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the vale of Kashmir. Unlike flatwork chain stitch, aari work is executed freehand directly onto fabric, demanding extraordinary spatial memory from the artisan. Here, that same needle traces loose, full-blown flowers across a chiffon ground printed in an unexpected camouflage palette, where the wildness of the print and the tenderness of the floral embroidery exist in deliberate tension. The kaftan silhouette, roomy and unstructured, honours the Kashmiri tradition of layering craft over comfort without apology.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this kaftan as a cover-up over wide-leg ivory palazzo trousers for a terrace dinner, letting the embroidery speak without competition. For a daytime arts event or gallery opening, layer it over a fitted churidar in deep forest green and finish with oxidised silver jhumkas from Rajasthan. As resort wear, pair it directly over a swimsuit with flat Kolhapuri chappals in tan leather and a single hammered-brass cuff on the wrist. The camouflage ground reads as neutral in each context, allowing the Aari flowers to carry all the ornament needed.

to last,

Fabric & care

Chiffon, whether polyester or silk-blend, is unforgiving of heat and agitation. Hand wash this kaftan alone in cold water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, using only a soft pressing motion rather than wringing. Rinse thoroughly and roll it inside a clean cotton towel to absorb excess water before hanging in shade. Never place it in direct sunlight, which fades the printed camouflage ground unevenly. Store flat or loosely rolled in breathable muslin, away from synthetic bags that trap moisture. With consistent care, the Aari embroidery retains its texture and sheen across many seasons.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
