Behind this piece
Georgette, named after the French couturière Georgette de la Plante, reached Indian textile culture through colonial-era trade and swiftly found its place in the wardrobes of urban India. Lightweight and subtly crêped, it lends itself beautifully to fluid silhouettes and vivid surface printing. The feather motif printed across this kaftan draws from a long tradition of nature-inspired textile decoration, echoing the ikat and kalamkari vocabularies of artisans across Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, where birds and plumage have adorned cloth for centuries. Here, that sensibility is reinterpreted through contemporary digital printing on whisper-fine georgette.
How to style
Wear this kaftan as a beach cover-up over a solid swimsuit in ivory or sand, slipping into flat Kolhapuri sandals for ease. For a relaxed evening gathering, layer it over slim cigarette trousers in off-white and add oxidised silver drop earrings to let the print carry the conversation. A third reading: style it as a tunic over straight-cut palazzo pants in a tonal neutral, completing the look with block-printed juttis from Jaipur and a single glass bangle. Each approach honours the garment's effortless, unhurried character without overcrowding its generous print.
Fabric & care
Georgette is a delicate crêpe-weave fabric requiring considered handling. Hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; machine washing risks distorting the crêpe texture and fading the print. Do not wring. Instead, press the fabric gently between a dry towel to remove excess water. Hang to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which degrades both the fibre and the printed colours over time. Iron on a low setting, preferably on the reverse side, with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded loosely in a cotton muslin bag to prevent creasing and fibre stress.
