about the piece,

Description

Woven from the cold silence of the Himalayas, this shawl carries warmth that goes far beyond season. Pure Pashmina, combed from the underbelly of the Changthangi goat on the high plateaus of Ladakh, forms the ground of this piece: a field of ivory and colour rendered into a repeating diamond lattice that recalls the geometric vocabulary of old Kashmiri design. Across this ground, Sozni needlework unfolds with characteristic patience, each floral butta sewn with a single fine needle by artisans in the Kashmir Valley who inherit a tradition counted among the most exacting embroidery forms in the subcontinent. The scale of the motifs, their delicate spacing, and the restraint in the colour palette together speak of a sensibility refined over centuries. This is a shawl suited to weddings, formal gatherings, and those quiet occasions when dressing well is itself a form of respect. Drape it over a silk kurta or a tailored anarkali for a pairing that needs no further ornament. Folded over the shoulders with a plain sari, it becomes the singular statement of the entire ensemble.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sozni embroidery is among the oldest needle arts of the Kashmir Valley, practised by craftsmen known as soznikar who inherit the stitch through generations of familial apprenticeship. The word sozni derives from the Persian for needle, and the tradition traces its roots to the Mughal courts, where fine kani and sozni shawls were coveted as diplomatic gifts. Here, the soznikar's single-thread hook needle traces delicate floral butta across pure Pashmina, the fibre combed from Changthangi goats of Ladakh's high plateaus. The diamond pattern ground unites geometry and bloom in a dialogue that is entirely, unmistakably Kashmiri.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this shawl over an ivory Chanderi kurta set for a winter festive gathering, securing it at one shoulder with a kundan brooch to anchor the colours. For a contemporary pairing, layer it loosely over straight-cut charcoal wool trousers and a silk blouse, letting the multicolour butta draw the eye. At a destination wedding in a cooler climate, wrap it over a silk Banarasi lehenga and finish the look with oxidised silver jhumkas and pointed khussa flats. In each arrangement, the shawl functions not as accessory but as the central statement.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pashmina fibre is fine and long-lived when treated with patience. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral shampoo, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Support the full weight of the wet shawl when lifting it from the water. Roll it gently inside a clean cotton towel to draw out moisture, then reshape and dry flat in shade, away from direct heat. Fold along the embroidered butta rather than across them to protect the sozni stitches. Store folded in a muslin or cotton bag with a cedar block, never in polythene, which traps humidity.
