Behind this piece
This shawl holds two distinct inheritances in one fold. The ground is pure Pashmina, combed from Changthangi goats on the high plateaus of Ladakh, where altitude and cold produce fibres of incomparable fineness. Laid across it is Kalamkari embroidery, a tradition rooted in the temple towns of Andhra Pradesh, where artisans once drew devotional narratives in plant-derived inks. Here, that vocabulary is translated into heavily worked floral polychrome, stitched by hand onto a ground as dark and quiet as a sky without stars. Two geographies, one conversation.
How to style
Wear it draped over the shoulders of an ivory Banarasi silk sari for a winter wedding, the embroidery's colour doing all the ornamental work a necklace might otherwise attempt. For a festive evening, lay it over a deep-toned velvet or raw-silk kurta and let it fall loose, paired with juttis in bronze leather. During cooler diaspora winters, knot it softly over a charcoal cashmere coat, treating it as a statement layer rather than mere warmth, with simple gold ear studs to anchor the look without competing with the embroidery.
Fabric & care
Hand-wash in cold water with a capful of mild, pH-neutral detergent formulated for delicate fibres. Never wring or twist. Press the water out gently and lay flat on a clean cotton towel to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades the polychrome threads over time. Do not hang, as wet Pashmina stretches under its own weight. Store folded, never rolled, wrapped in unbleached muslin inside a sealed container. Place cedar blocks nearby to deter moths. Treated with this care, pure Pashmina only softens and improves across decades.
