the story,

Behind this piece

Gujarat has long held a distinguished place in India's textile traditions, and the art of zari weaving is among its most enduring gifts. The golden paisleys woven across this lehenga skirt draw from a vocabulary that once adorned the courts of Saurashtra and the trading families of Surat. Paisley, known in Indian craft as kairi or ambi, carries centuries of symbolic weight, evoking abundance and the curve of a mango in bloom. Rendered in zari on art silk, the motif here retains its ceremonial gravity while lending the skirt a warm, lantern-like luminosity.

to wear it,

How to style

For a festive evening, pair this skirt with a plain ivory or champagne silk blouse in a deep-back design, and finish with polki or antique gold jadau jewellery. For a pre-wedding daytime function, a cropped hand-embroidered koti jacket in complementary terracotta tones works beautifully over a minimalist blouse. For a fusion approach suited to a cultural evening or gallery opening, layer the skirt with a fitted silk kurta in deep burgundy, cinch lightly at the waist, and complete with kolhapuri block heels in tan leather. Each reading suits the skirt's warmth equally well.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk carries the sheen of natural silk but requires careful handling specific to its synthetic composition. Dry clean is always the safest choice, particularly given the zari woven throughout the fabric. If hand washing is necessary, use cold water with a mild, ph-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight, which can dull the golden threads over time. Store folded between sheets of muslin cloth, never on wire hangers. Avoid contact with perfume or deodorant directly on the fabric to preserve thread integrity.
