Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Description
There is a particular joy in a colour that refuses to be quiet, and this minion-yellow border carries that joy with complete conviction. Worked in art silk, the fabric catches light the way a festive courtyard does at dusk, warm and faintly luminous. The embroidered floral pattern is rendered in zari and sequins, a pairing that belongs to the long tradition of surface ornamentation practised across the ateliers of Surat and the embroidery workshops of Lucknow, where thread and metal have always spoken to one another. Each floral motif is placed along the border with an evenness that suggests careful hands and a trained eye, unhurried and purposeful. The zari lends a restrained metallic shimmer, while the sequins introduce movement, catching and releasing light with every shift of the fabric. As a material sold by length, it invites the maker's own imagination into the process. Use this border to edge the hem of a kurta or to finish a lehenga panel where a lift of brightness is needed. It pairs especially well with ivory or deep ochre base fabrics, where the yellow reads as festive rather than jarring.
Behind this piece
The vivid minion-yellow ground of this art silk fabric draws from a long tradition of border fabrics used in festive Indian dressing, where a single length of cloth carries the weight of celebration. The zari-sequin embroidery that traces its floral motifs along the border recalls the embellishment practices of ateliers across Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, where metallic threadwork and sequin-setting have historically elevated occasion wear. Art silk, a democratic descendant of pure mulberry silk, carries the luminosity of its ancestor while extending the craft's reach to a broader audience.
How to style
Cut and stitch this fabric into a gathered lehenga skirt, pairing it with a silk blouse in ivory or deep emerald to let the yellow border frame the hem. For a more contemporary silhouette, a wide-leg palazzo cut in this fabric works beautifully at a mehendi or haldi ceremony. Finish with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri sandals for a festive daytime look, or swap in polki studs and nude block heels for an evening reception. The border placement makes it especially effective as a dupatta panel sewn into a plain base fabric.
Fabric & care
Art silk is a cellulose-based or semi-synthetic fibre that holds dye well but is sensitive to prolonged water exposure. Hand-wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently and dry flat in shade to preserve the sequin embroidery and prevent the zari from oxidising. Do not tumble-dry or iron directly over the embellished border; use a pressing cloth on reverse. Store folded in a muslin bag away from direct light to prevent the yellow ground from fading over time.
