about the piece,

Description

Midnight holds its breath in the white tracery of Lucknow's most patient needlework. Chikankari is an art of restraint, born in the tehzeera of Awadhi courts and kept alive today by artisans in the bylanes of Lucknow who coax shadow-work, phanda, and bakhiya stitches from a single strand of thread. On this deep navy cotton kurta, that vocabulary of white bloom and ripple reads like moonlight on still water. Pure cotton breathes through the warmth of the season, its weave soft enough to carry a full day's wear without complaint. The pajama, cut in the same cloth, completes the silhouette with the easy authority that Lucknawi menswear has always understood. Wear it as is to an intimate festive gathering, where understatement speaks louder than ornament. A pair of white or ivory mojris and a fine silver chain are all the conversation this set needs beside itself.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's most intimate act of patience. Originating in the Mughal courts of Awadh, this whitework embroidery tradition has been kept alive for centuries by artisan communities in the mohallas of old Lucknow, where needle and thread move in conversation with muslin and cotton. The term itself is thought to derive from the Persian word for embroidery. On this midnight-toned pure cotton kurta, those same stitches, shadow work, phanda, and murri, rise against deep indigo ground cloth, turning a utilitarian set into something closer to poetry worn against the skin.

to wear it,

How to style

For an evening gathering, layer this kurta with a fine Pashmina stole in ivory or grey and slip on hand-stitched Kolhapuri mojris. At a festive occasion, ground the look with an antique silver pendant and tassel earrings sourced from Rajasthani silver markets. For daytime wear, pair the kurta alone over slim trousers in off-white and finish with woven juttis in a contrasting saffron. The midnight ground absorbs colour beautifully from accessories, so a single bold piece, a bead necklace or a silk pocket square, is enough to complete the statement without crowding the embroidery.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton breathes but rewards attention. Hand wash this kurta separately in cold water using a mild, colour-safe detergent; machine washing risks distorting the Chikankari stitches over time. Do not wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat in the shade to dry, as direct sunlight will fade the ground colour gradually. Once dry, press on reverse with a medium iron, placing a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the embroidery to protect raised stitches. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag, away from damp, and the cotton will hold its integrity across many seasons.
