about the piece,

Description

There are shawls made for warmth, and then there are shawls made for memory. Woven from Tusha wool, the softest grade of Pashmina drawn from the underbelly of the Changthangi goat, this shawl carries the particular quietness of the Kashmir Valley in every thread. Along its border, Sozni embroiderers have worked their needles with a restraint that is itself a kind of mastery: fine floral motifs rendered in single-thread stitching, a craft that demands years of apprenticeship and rewards only the most patient eye. The palette, offered in cobblestone, ivory, and mirage grey, speaks to the understated sensibility of the man who wears heritage without announcement. This is a shawl suited to the cooler months of a wedding season, to an evening gathering where the conversation is unhurried, or to a quiet winter morning when beauty is its own sufficient reason. Drape it across the shoulders over a fine ivory kurta, or let it rest folded at the elbow alongside a formal sherwani. Either way, it does not compete; it completes.

Gentle & simple
the story,

Behind this piece

Tusha wool comes from the fine underbelly of the Himalayan ibex, gathered seasonally in Kashmir's upper reaches. Among the rarest of the ring shawls, it carries the distinction of passing through a finger ring so gossamer is its weave. The Sozni hand-embroidery along this border is the work of Kashmir's needle-artists, predominantly from families in the Srinagar valley, who use a single hooked needle to lay flat, refined stitches that never pierce the reverse face. The restraint of the borderwork here is deliberate: a cartouche vocabulary that lets the Tusha ground speak first.

to wear it,

How to style

In cobblestone or mirage gray, this shawl rests naturally over a tailored ivory bandhgala at a winter wedding or a literary evening. Drape it loose across one shoulder over a dark churidar and let the Sozni border fall at the cuff line for understated effect. For the diaspora wardrobe, pair it with a cashmere turtleneck and straight trousers, finishing with kolhapuri slip-ons in tan leather. A simple silver ring or an oxidised bracelet is all the jewellery this piece requires; its texture already carries the conversation without assistance from anything louder.

to last,

Fabric & care

Tusha wool is extraordinarily fine and must never meet a washing machine. Hand-wash in cold water using a pH-neutral wool wash, submerging the shawl gently without wringing. Press out water by rolling it in a clean dry towel, then reshape and dry flat in shade away from direct sunlight, which yellows the fibre over time. Store folded, never hung, within a breathable muslin bag alongside dried neem leaves or cedar to discourage moth. With this care, Tusha acquires a softness that only deepens across years of considered use.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
