the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven silk brocade for over five centuries, and within that tradition, Tibetan-pattern brocades occupy a quietly exalted place. The mazarine blue of this fabric draws from a vocabulary of colour that Banarasi weavers absorbed through centuries of cross-cultural trade with Tibet and Central Asia. The Kasim family of Banaras, working within the city's storied handloom lineage, has rendered roses in this cloth through the meticulous interlocking of silk threads on a pit loom, a process that resists mechanisation entirely. Each rose emerges from the loom as an act of considered repetition, not decoration.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into a structured anarkali for a Diwali gathering and let the mazarine speak against 22-carat gold jhumkas. Alternatively, commission a sleeveless blouse for a Kanjivaram or tissue silk saree, using this brocade as the statement piece that anchors muted drapes. For diaspora dressers attending a wedding abroad, it translates beautifully into a wide-leg trouser paired with a georgette kurta, finished with kolhapuri block-heeled sandals. The deep blue reads as formal without severity, and the woven roses ensure the fabric needs no surface embellishment to feel complete.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk handloom brocade rewards patience in its upkeep. Dry clean for the first two washes to preserve the structural integrity of the woven roses and the lustre of the silk ground. If hand washing at home, use cold water and a silk-specific, pH-neutral cleanser, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Lay flat in shade to dry. Store folded in pure cotton muslin, away from synthetic fabrics and direct light. Cedar blocks, rather than mothballs, protect without leaving chemical residue on the fibres. Properly stored, this silk will hold its depth of colour for decades.
