the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven silk into ceremony for over five centuries, its looms concentrated in neighbourhoods like Madanpura and Lallapura where Ansari weavers pass pattern-knowledge from father to son. This saree works in the city's classical vocabulary: zari roses lifted from Mughal garden manuscripts, and a paisley vine border that echoes the *kalka* motifs seen on nineteenth-century court textiles. Art silk carries the visual language of Banarasi weave with generous drape and a luminous surface. The mars-red ground, neither orange nor crimson, sits in that precise register that Banaras always understood as the colour of auspicious fire.

to wear it,

How to style

For a winter wedding, pair this with a raw-silk full-sleeved blouse in deep burgundy and uncut diamond jhumkas. A daytime festive occasion calls for a sleeveless brocade blouse in ivory, flat Kolhapuri chappals in tan, and a single gold kada. For a corporate celebration or cultural evening, drape in a nivi pleat with a tailored full-back blouse in matte black; add oxidised silver long earrings and a potli clutch in matching red. The all-over zari roses are already ornamental enough to carry each look without layering further embellishment.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk, a woven viscose fibre, requires gentle handling to preserve the zari's sheen and the fabric's body. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, ph-neutral detergent; never soak for more than three minutes. Do not wring. Roll the saree inside a dry cotton towel to remove moisture, then hang in shade away from direct sunlight. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the zari surface. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, not plastic, in a cool, dry space to prevent moisture damage and fibre distortion over time.
