about the piece,

Description

Maroon holds within it the memory of old courts and winter evenings lit by lamp. This dupatta is worked in a velvet that carries depth the way dusk carries colour, a slow richness that shifts with movement and light. Across its field, zari threads trace a vine of floral leaves in the patient language of embroidery traditions long practised across the craft corridors of North India, where gold work on pile fabric has dressed celebrations for generations. The scalloped border frames the whole with an architectural precision that speaks of careful hands and considered design. At this weight and in this fabric, the piece moves between seasons with ease, suited equally to the cool months of late autumn and the air-conditioned formality of summer gatherings. Drape it over a silk kurta in ivory or deep teal to let the maroon ground read as a statement without effort. It works just as naturally folded over the shoulder of an Anarkali, where the zari vine catches the light at every turn.

the story,

Behind this piece

Velvet weaving in India carries the weight of Mughal patronage, when silk-pile fabrics draped the courts of Agra and Lahore with an almost ceremonial gravity. This dupatta continues that lineage: the deep maroon ground is cut velvet, its pile lending the fabric its characteristic depth and light-absorbing warmth. Zari threadwork traces a floral vine across the field, each leaf and blossom rendered with the controlled precision of hands schooled in metal-wrapped embroidery traditions. The scalloped border frames the whole as a miniature painting is framed, with intention and a quiet sense of completion.

to wear it,

How to style

Lay this dupatta across the shoulders of an ivory or cream silk kurta for a study in tonal contrast that suits a winter wedding or a festive evening gathering. Alternatively, drape it over one shoulder against a deep-toned Banarasi lehenga; the zari embroidery will converse naturally with woven brocade. For a more restrained occasion, pair it with straight-cut black churidar pyjamas and a collarless kurta. In each configuration, keep jewellery to polished kundan or uncut gold. Footwear in tan leather juttis or block-heeled mojaris completes the register without overstatement.

to last,

Fabric & care

Velvet requires handling with the same deliberateness one would bring to any pile fabric. Dry-clean only; water immersion flattens the pile and can distort the zari threads irreparably. Never wring, fold under weight, or press directly with an iron. To remove light creases, hold a steam iron several centimetres above the surface and allow steam to work gently downward. Store flat or loosely rolled in a soft muslin cloth, away from direct light and moisture. Cedar blocks placed nearby will discourage insects without the chemical residue that damages metallic embroidery over time.
