the story,

Behind this piece

Varanasi has woven silk for over two thousand years, and the peacock motif within its borders carries an even longer memory. In Banarasi tradition, the mor, or peacock, is not decorative whimsy; it is royal iconography, a motif favoured by Mughal court weavers and carried forward by the karigar families of Madanpura and Peeli Kothi. This georgette silk border unites that inheritance with the weightless drape of pure silk georgette, each woven feather emerging from the jacquard loom with the patience that only handcraft permits. Thirty Indian buyers have already taken this border home.

to wear it,

How to style

Use this border as the finishing statement on a cream or ivory silk anarkali, letting the maroon ground read as a deliberate contrast against pale fabric. For a festive occasion such as a sangeet or reception, pair it along the hemline of a handwoven Chanderi kurta with polki or kundan earrings in antique gold. For a quieter afternoon gathering, apply it to the edge of a dupatta worn with raw silk separates. Kolhapuri flats in tan leather keep the look grounded; heeled juttis in ivory add formality without effort.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk georgette is a fine, open-weave cloth that rewards attentive handling. Dry-clean this border whenever it is sewn into a finished garment. If you must hand-wash the unstitched fabric, use cool water below thirty degrees Celsius and a mild, ph-neutral detergent; never wring or twist. Lay flat to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which degrades silk lustre permanently. Store rolled in soft muslin, not folded, to prevent crease lines setting into the weave. Cedar blocks placed nearby discourage insects without the chemical residue that moth-balls can leave on fine silk.
