the story,

Behind this piece

The Baluchari tradition was born in the village of Baluchar in Murshidabad, Bengal, where weavers once depicted scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana directly into their silk borders. This Bangalore interpretation carries that pictorial language forward, rendering apsaras, the celestial dancers of Hindu cosmology, across the entire field in zari. The shift from pure Murshidabad silk to art silk allows the figurative weave to travel beyond its regional origin, making the iconography accessible without diminishing its visual authority. The lyons-blue ground gives the gold zari apsaras a theatrical luminosity rooted in genuine textile history.

to wear it,

How to style

For a cultural evening or classical performance, pair this saree with a raw-silk blouse in antique gold and temple-motif earrings in polished brass. A Dhakai-drape or traditional Bengali atpoure style will honour the saree's pictorial heritage. For a festive family gathering, choose a deep ivory blouse with kundan work and block-heeled juttis in tan leather. For a diaspora celebration abroad, a minimal silk blouse in ivory and a single statement necklace, perhaps polki or oxidised silver, allows the all-over apsara weave to read as the centrepiece without competition.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk, a viscose-based fibre, requires handling with the same respect as its natural counterparts. Hand-wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently and press out excess water by rolling in a clean towel. Dry flat, away from direct sunlight, which will fade the lyons-blue ground over time. Iron on a low-silk setting, placing a thin cotton cloth between iron and fabric to protect the zari threads. Store folded in soft muslin, never plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe and retain its drape.
