the story,

Behind this piece

Pochampally, a village in Telangana's Nalgonda district, lends its name to one of India's most precisely demanding weave traditions. Here, the ikat technique requires that weavers resist-dye both warp and weft threads before a single row is set on the loom, calculating the final pattern entirely in advance. This double-ikat discipline, known locally as Pagadabandhu, is a Geographical Indication-protected craft practised by the Padmasali and Devanga weaving communities. In this white and black cotton saree, the geometric repeat carries centuries of that calculation: unhurried, mathematical, and quietly authoritative.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree for a daytime literary event or a creative workspace where considered dressing is noticed. Pair it with a slim black cotton or mulmul blouse, slightly cropped, to let the ikat border read cleanly at the hip. Add oxidised silver earrings from Odisha or Rajasthan for tonal harmony. For footwear, flat Kolhapuri chappals in tan leather balance the monochrome palette without competing. A second reading: drape the pallu pinned forward over a fitted white kurta worn as an inner layer, softening the silhouette for a longer evening occasion.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton ikat requires gentle handling to preserve the intentional bleed of its resist-dyed edges, which give the pattern its characteristic softness. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping each colour section submerged briefly rather than soaked. Do not wring. Roll the saree in a clean cotton towel to remove excess water, then dry flat in shade. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Store folded in a pure cotton muslin bag, away from direct light, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent crease fatigue.
