Behind this piece
Banaras has woven light into fabric for over a thousand years, and this saree carries that luminous inheritance. The lucent-white field, striped in a quietly rhythmic weave, speaks to the city's long tradition of working with lustrous yarns that catch and hold the eye. Art silk, a fibre that democratised the opulence of pure silk, is handled here with the same architectural discipline that Banarasi weavers apply to their finest brocades. The red border anchors the composition, a classical counterpoint that generations of weavers along the ghats have understood instinctively.
How to style
For daytime cultural events, pair this saree with an ivory or champagne silk blouse and flat Kolhapuri sandals, letting the weave speak without distraction. At an evening gathering, a deep-red or ruby blouse echoes the border and invites gold jhumkas and a slim gold bangle to complete the register. For a contemporary reading, drape it in a pre-stitched style with a structured sleeveless blouse in cream, adding block-printed mojris and minimal oxidised silver. The white field suits both traditional and modern silhouettes with equal composure.
Fabric & care
Art silk performs best with a gentle cold-water hand wash using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Never wring or twist; press the water out carefully and lay the saree flat on a clean cotton towel to dry away from direct sunlight, which can dull the fibre's sheen over time. Once dry, steam-press on a low setting with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag, not plastic, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease lines along the border.
