Behind this piece
Leheria is one of Rajasthan's oldest resist-dyeing traditions, and Jodhpur sits at its living heart. The word itself means "wave" in Hindi, and every diagonal stripe across these three chiffon dupattas is the result of cloth being rolled tightly on the bias, bound at intervals, and plunged into successive dye baths. The gota border, a narrow ribbon of woven metallic trim, was historically the signature of Rajput court dress. Together, the two crafts create something rare: the spontaneity of tie-dye held in place by the precision of a goldsmith's edge.
How to style
Wear one dupatta loosely draped over a white cotton kurta for a Jaipur Literature Festival afternoon, anchored with silver jhumkas from Rajasthan. For a festive gathering, layer a second over a silk sharara in ivory or deep rose, pairing with kolhapuri block-heeled sandals. The third works beautifully as a shoulder wrap over a sleeveless anarkali at a summer wedding reception. Each dupatta in the set carries a slightly different dye variation, so they can be worn together across an outfit or gifted individually to mark three separate occasions.
Fabric & care
Chiffon is lightweight and prone to snagging, so machine washing is best avoided entirely. Hand wash each dupatta separately in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, using a gentle squeeze rather than any wringing motion. Rinse twice to clear all soap residue. Roll the dupatta in a clean cotton towel to remove excess water, then dry flat in shade away from direct sunlight, which fades leheria dye over time. Store folded loosely in muslin, never compressed under heavier textiles. The gota border should be kept away from moisture when not in use.
