Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the ari, that pulls thread through taut fabric in a continuous chain stitch. It flourishes across the Kutch and Saurashtra regions of Gujarat, where artisan communities have refined the craft over centuries, stitching intricate motifs onto cotton and silk for local patrons and royal courts alike. The elephant, auspicious and architecturally grand, is among the most beloved subjects in this tradition. Each trunk raised, each caparisoned flank, carries the muscle memory of hands trained across generations. These three cotton shoppers bring that living archive into everyday use.
How to style
Carry the largest bag to a Sunday farmers market paired with a block-printed cotton kurta in indigo or rust, kolhapuri chappals, and oxidised silver bangles. For a diaspora occasion, a festive anarkali in ivory or gold lets the embroidered elephants speak without competition; finish with juttis in mirror work. The smallest of the three works beautifully as a project bag or book tote for a casual afternoon, paired with a linen co-ord and wooden bead jewellery. Rotate all three to suit mood and occasion; their cotton base means they soften and improve with honest use.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton breathes and rewards gentle handling. Hand wash each bag separately in cool water with a mild, colour-safe detergent, as the Aari chain stitching can loosen under machine agitation. Do not wring; press the water out gently and dry flat in shade to prevent the embroidery threads from pulling or the cotton from distorting. Iron on a low setting from the reverse side, placing a pressing cloth over the embroidered areas. Store folded loosely in a cotton muslin pouch rather than compressed in a drawer. Properly cared for, the fabric will hold its colour and the stitching its clarity for years.
