the story,

Behind this piece

Sanganeri printing traces its roots to Sanganer, a town near Jaipur in Rajasthan, where block-printing workshops have operated for several centuries. Traditionally practised by the Chippa community, the craft involves hand-carved wooden blocks pressed onto fine cotton in rhythmic, meditative repetition. Vegetable dyes, derived from sources such as indigo, turmeric, and pomegranate rind, give each print its particular depth and slight variation. The wrap-around silhouette here is a natural companion to this tradition: unhurried, unpretentious, and shaped for movement. Four skirts together offer a small archive of Sanganeri colour, each length carrying the warmth of Rajasthan's artisan quarters.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear the deeper-toned skirt with a white khadi kurta and Kolhapuri chappals for an easy afternoon in a heritage market. For a diaspora gathering or a summer arts event, layer the lighter print beneath a fitted linen blouse and finish with oxidised silver ear cuffs. The third skirt pairs beautifully with a sleeveless chanderi top in a complementary solid, adding textural contrast without competing with the block print. A pair of juttis in tan or brick completes any of these looks. The fourth skirt works quietly as beachwear or as a coverup over cotton separates.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton printed with vegetable dyes rewards gentle handling. Wash each skirt separately in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, turning it inside out to protect the printed surface. Avoid soaking, which can soften the dye's intensity over time. Do not wring; press out water gently and dry flat in shade, as prolonged direct sun can cause gradual fading. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Stored folded loosely in a breathable cotton bag, these skirts will hold their colour and hand-feel across many seasons of regular wear.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
