Behind this piece
Block printing on cotton is one of India's oldest textile languages, spoken most fluently in the workshops of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Carved teak or sheesham blocks, inked with natural or azo-free dyes, are pressed by hand across lengths of fabric, each impression carrying the slight irregularity that separates craft from manufacture. The pom-pom trim belongs to a distinct folk vocabulary, common to the border work of Rajasthani artisans who finish scarves, dupattas and household textiles with tufted wool or cotton. Together, print and pompom place these scarves at the meeting point of two living traditions.
How to style
Drape one loosely over a white kurta and straight-cut trousers for a day at a heritage market or cultural fair, grounding the look with kolhapuri sandals. For cooler evenings, layer a deeper-toned scarf over a solid anarkali, letting the printed border show at the hem. The third reading is global: tie one as a headscarf or belt over a linen sheath dress, adding oxidised silver jhumkas to anchor the ethnic register. The pom-pom edge reads as playful rather than precious, which makes each combination feel considered rather than overdressed.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton breathes and softens with each wash, but the block-printed surface and pom-pom trim ask for a degree of care. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; avoid soaking for longer than ten minutes, as prolonged immersion can cause dye migration. Do not wring. Roll the scarf in a clean towel to remove excess water, then dry flat in shade to preserve both colour and shape. Store folded, not hung, to prevent fibre stress. With consistent gentle care, pure cotton only improves over years of use.
