the story,

Behind this piece

Zari weaving carries within it the memory of Mughal courts, where gold thread was considered a language of ceremony. The technique of interlacing metallic yarn into fabric grounds itself most deeply in the ateliers of Varanasi and Surat, where artisans have spent generations perfecting the tension between silk and zari so neither overwhelms the other. Here, paisleys and florals bloom across art silk in a grammar borrowed from brocade tradition, translated into a wearable weight. The result is a skirt that holds historical resonance without demanding occasion as its only justification.

to wear it,

How to style

In Caviar Black, pair this skirt with a fine ivory georgette blouse with pintuck detailing and a sheer dupatta in champagne. Silver jhumkas and block-heeled mojris complete an evening that reads as considered, not costumed. In Flame Scarlet, layer it beneath a structured cream bandhgala kurta for a fusion silhouette suited to a winter wedding reception. For a daytime cultural event, tuck in a plain silk kurta in deep forest green, add oxidised choker jewellery, and finish with tan leather kolhapuris. Each reading of this skirt rewards restraint.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk, a woven cellulose fibre, responds poorly to rough handling and direct heat. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation to an absolute minimum. Do not wring or twist the fabric; press out water gently and dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades both the ground weave and the zari lustre. Iron on the lowest setting, always on the reverse side, with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded in soft muslin, never in plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe across seasons.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
