about the piece,

Description

There is a quietness to this green, the colour of young teak leaves just after the first rain. Woven in fine cotton by the artisans of Vanavasi in Tamil Nadu's Salem district, this saree carries the unhurried rhythms of a community that has long held hand-block printing close to its practice. Each paisley motif is pressed by hand onto the cloth, the repeat never quite mechanical, always bearing the small, honest variations that distinguish a block-printed textile from anything produced otherwise. The zari stripe border runs along the edge with gentle authority, its metallic thread lending the cotton a quiet formality without overwhelming its everyday ease. Cotton of this weight breathes well through warm afternoons and manages the demands of both a working day and a relaxed festive gathering with equal composure. Pair it with a sleeveless silk blouse in deep gold or unbleached ivory to let the green hold its full depth. A single strand of oxidised silver at the neck, and perhaps a cane clutch, would complete a look that asks nothing of occasion and gives everything to feeling.

the story,

Behind this piece

Block printing on cotton carries a long memory. Practised across forest-edge communities in the Vanavasi region of Chhattisgarh, it draws on a tradition of hand-carved wooden blocks pressed into natural-dyed cloth, each paisley motif descended from Mughal garden imagery filtered through tribal sensibility. The leaf-green ground speaks to the surrounding sal forests. The zari stripe border arrives as a later refinement, where metal-thread weaving met resist-printed cotton in the weekly haats where weavers and traders converged. This saree holds that conversation between the forest and the marketplace in every repeat.

to wear it,

How to style

For a literary festival or gallery opening, drape this in the Bengali style and pair it with a raw silk blouse in warm ivory, terracotta jhumkas in brass, and kolhapuri flats. For a garden wedding, a fitted cotton blouse in deep forest green and oxidised silver bangles will let the paisley work breathe. On a regular afternoon, a simple half-drape with a crisp white sleeveless blouse and block-printed potli bag keeps the register relaxed without losing intention. The leaf-green reads differently in each light, and rewards that versatility.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wash this cotton saree in cold water by hand, using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Do not soak for longer than five minutes, as prolonged immersion can loosen the block-printed pigments. Rinse thoroughly and do not wring; instead, press between two dry towels and hang in deep shade. The zari stripe border must never meet a hot iron directly; press on reverse with a thin cotton cloth between the fabric and the iron. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag, away from moisture and direct light, and refold along different lines each season to prevent permanent creasing.
