Kashmiri Short Jacket with Chain Stitch Aari Embroidered Floral Sprigs and Side Pockets
Dry clean recommended. Store with natural cedar or neem leaves. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
Description
A jacket that carries the mountains within its stitching. Worked by Kashmiri artisans who have inherited the aari hook across generations, this short wool jacket brings the valley's signature chain-stitch embroidery to a silhouette made for the contemporary wardrobe. Floral sprigs climb across the surface in the unhurried rhythm that defines Kashmir's needlework tradition, each motif rendered in thread that catches light with quiet confidence. The wool ground is warm without weight, generous enough for the first cool evenings of autumn and the lingering chill of a northern winter. Practical side pockets and a neat cropped length speak to a garment designed for living in, not merely admiring. It is offered in three considered colours: Pageant Blue, a deep and dignified hue; Plein Air, soft as morning mist; and Red Plum, richly autumnal. Layer it over a fine cotton kurta for a relaxed daytime ease, or wear it above straight-cut trousers when the occasion calls for something a little more composed.
Behind this piece
In the Vale of Kashmir, the aari needle has traced its language across wool and pashmina for centuries. Chain stitch embroidery, worked with a fine hooked tool rather than a conventional needle, builds each motif stitch by stitch into dense, jewel-like surfaces. The floral sprigs here belong to a vocabulary refined over generations in the old craft quarters of Srinagar, where karigars inherit pattern and technique together. Executed on warm wool, this short jacket carries that lineage forward: intimate in scale, precise in geometry, and entirely made by hand.
How to style
Wear the Pageant Blue over a cream silk kurta with narrow churidar for a winter wedding reception, and anchor the look with oxidised silver jhumkas. The Plein Air reads beautifully against wide-leg ivory palazzos on a cool festive afternoon. For the Red Plum, layer over a fine merino polo and slim straight trousers for a contemporary, city-ready silhouette. Each colourway responds well to kolhapuri sandals or block-heeled juttis. Keep accessories minimal; the embroidered surface is the conversation.
Fabric & care
Wool holds its shape best with dry cleaning, particularly given the density of the aari embroidery, whose stitches can distort under agitation. If hand washing is necessary, use cold water with a gentle wool wash, never wring or twist the fabric, and press out moisture between clean towels. Dry flat in shade away from direct sunlight, which fades both wool and thread. Store folded, not hung, to prevent shoulder strain. Cedar blocks, not mothballs, will protect the fibre during longer storage between seasons.
