Kashmiri Jacket with Needle Sozni Embroidered Paisleys
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Description
There are jackets, and then there are quiet declarations of belonging. This piece is worked in needle sozni, the most patient of Kashmir's embroidery traditions, where a single craftsperson draws fine silk thread through fabric in stitches so small they read, at a distance, as shadow and light. The paisleys here follow a grammar centuries old, shaped by the same hands that once filled the courts of Mughal patrons with their sinuous, flame-tipped forms. Dupion silk provides the ground: its characteristic slub and lustre giving the black ground a depth that shifts as the wearer moves, allowing the embroidery to surface and recede with every fold. Made to order, each jacket is worked to your measure, which means the sozni stitches arrive precisely where they should, uncompromised by alteration. The result is a garment that carries the Jhelum valley in its very structure. Wear it over a column of ivory or oyster white for an evening where restraint does the talking. It suits, equally, the quiet formality of a winter mehendi or a literary gathering where craft is its own conversation.
Behind this piece
Sozni is one of Kashmir's most demanding needle arts, practised by karigars who spend years perfecting the single-needle technique that produces embroidery indistinguishable from the reverse as from the front. The paisleys on this jacket follow a lineage traceable to Mughal court patronage, when Kashmir's artisans were commissioned to ornament robes for emperors. Worked onto pure Dupion silk, whose natural slub gives each thread a shifting, candlelit quality, the motifs are rendered in fine silk floss. Black as the ground only deepens the embroidery's luminance, turning each paisley into something between a shadow and a jewel.
How to style
Wear this jacket over a column of ivory or champagne silk for a winter wedding reception, paired with Hyderabadi pearl drops and block-heeled mojris in antique gold. For a literary evening or cultural gathering, layer it over a fine wool turtleneck in charcoal and narrow silk trousers, keeping jewellery to a single cocktail ring. During the day, it elevates a plain Chanderi kurta and cigarette trousers effortlessly. The jet black ground makes it a natural complement to both muted Banarasi weaves and the crisp geometry of Pochampally ikat, depending on the occasion's register.
Fabric & care
Dupion silk's textured weave holds its body well but rewards careful handling. Dry clean this jacket to preserve both the silk's natural sheen and the tension of the Sozni threadwork, which can distort under water. If steaming at home, hold the iron several centimetres above the surface and never press directly onto the embroidery. Store folded in a clean cotton muslin cloth, avoiding plastic, which traps moisture. Keep away from prolonged sunlight, as even deep black silk will fade with sustained exposure. Properly cared for, this piece will remain vivid and structured across many decades of wear.
