the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the lanes of Srinagar and the villages of the Valley. Unlike the counted-thread discipline of sozni, aari work moves freely across the fabric surface, allowing the craftsman to build dense, organic florals and paisleys with a fluency that feels almost drawn rather than stitched. On this chocolate brown wool, that fluency is everywhere: petals curling at the cuff, paisley forms anchoring the yoke, each motif placed with the confidence of a tradition that has dressed courts and collectors alike.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this jacket over slim ivory or champagne churidar trousers and pointed-toe mojris in tan leather for a winter festive gathering. For a quieter afternoon, layer it above straight-cut dark denim and low block-heeled boots, letting the embroidery carry the occasion alone. At a heritage wedding or cultural evening, pair it with a silk kurta in rust or deep teal beneath, add uncut polki earrings in gold, and carry a Kullu-weave stole loosely across one shoulder. The chocolate ground is forgiving and generous with colour, working equally well with warm and cooler tones.

to last,

Fabric & care

Kashmiri wool holds its character longest when treated with patience. Hand wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral wool wash, gently pressing rather than wringing the fabric. Never soak. Lay flat on a clean cotton towel to dry in shade, reshaping the shoulders by hand while the wool is still damp. Before storing, allow the jacket to air fully, then fold along the seams with acid-free tissue between layers to protect the embroidered surface. Cedar blocks, not mothballs, will guard the fibre through warm months without leaving a chemical residue.
